Welcome to the ICS Paris Learning Community!
I joined ICS Paris over 15 years ago. After earning a degree in Organic Chemistry, I enjoyed teaching Maths and Science in the Middle School. Following a role as Deputy Head of School, I took on the coordination of the Middle Years Programme and taught Chemistry in the Diploma Programme.
I particularly enjoyed working with our vibrant school community and witnessing students develop throughout the programme. The MYP nurtures student agency and critical thinking, helping them become active global citizens, capable of adapting to an ever-changing world.

Teaching and Learning in Context
The best way for students to learn is when their learning experiences are connected to their lives.
Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of:

Conceptual Understanding
Concepts are big ideas that have relevance within specific disciplines and across subject areas. MYP students use concepts as a vehicle to inquire into issues and ideas of personal, local, and global significance and examine knowledge holistically. The MYP prescribes sixteen key interdisciplinary concepts along with related concepts for each discipline.

Inclusion and Diversity are fundamental principles of the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). Aligned with the IB mission to foster intercultural understanding and respect, ICS Paris actively values the diversity inherent in its student body, encompassing differences in culture, language, learning styles, abilities, and personal backgrounds.

Language and Literature
Language Learning at ICS Paris Middle School
At ICS Paris, we take a dynamic and immersive approach to language and literature, fostering communication, creativity, global connections, and diverse perspectives. As an international school in the heart of Paris, English serves as our primary language of instruction, ensuring students gain a strong foundation in global communication. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of French, allowing students to engage with the local culture and environment

In our middle school curriculum, we also offer Japanese and Korean, broadening students' linguistic and cultural horizons. Through these languages, we encourage students to make meaningful connections between their studies and the world around them.
We strive to cultivate not only analytical and critical thinking but also a personal and creative approach to engaging with texts. By exploring literature from different historical periods and cultural backgrounds, students enhance their understanding of diverse perspectives.
From Grade 6 - Grade 10, students at ICS Paris analyze literary and non-literary texts, examining personal, local, and global themes. They engage with language through various media and formats, applying linguistic and literary concepts in authentic, real-world contexts. Our aim is to instill a lifelong appreciation for language and literature while equipping students with the skills necessary for effective communication in an interconnected world.
Language Acquisition
At ICS Paris, our diverse community embraces over 70 nationalities, providing an enriching environment for students to develop strong language skills. We offer instruction in both French and English, with English as the academic language.
We offer language acquisition courses at the middle school level :

Our language program is designed around four key skills: listening, reading, speaking, and writing. Following the MYP framework, students are encouraged to engage with language in meaningful, real-world contexts that extend beyond the classroom. Our teachers use a multimodal approach to enhance comprehension and communication, while also fostering cultural and historical curiosity.
French Language Learning
4 periods weekly, 4 hours
*All Grade 6 to Grade 10 students receive a minimum of four hours of French language learning per week. We conduct placement tests to determine the student's level in French and then place them in Groups.
*Grade 6 to 8 students also have the option to choose additional French language learning or Spanish as part of their language option for a period of three years during the MYP; this option adds an additional 2 periods and 2 hours of French per week (total = 6 hours).
Mother Tongue Languages
3 periods weekly, 3 hours
*All Grade 6 to Grade 10 students may choose to learn Spanish at an acquisition level through our world language option.
*We support students in Grade 6 to Grade 10 with mother-tongue Japanese and Korean through dedicated classes with our language teachers after school.
*Mother tongue language learning is part of our curriculum with lessons in small groups with a lot of emphasis on grammar, reading and writing.
Mathematics
At ICS Paris, we take a highly personalized approach to teaching Mathematics. During the admissions process, students take a placement test to assess their level based on our existing groups. From Grade 6 to Grade 10, students are placed into one of four Mathematics groups, ranging from intermediate to advanced. This structure ensures that every child receives the right level of challenge to support their growth and help them reach their full potential.
Mathematics at ICS Paris goes beyond memorizing formulas and rules. We foster a dynamic and interactive learning environment where students actively engage in discovering mathematical concepts and their real-world applications. Our teaching philosophy, aligned with ICS and IB values, emphasizes inquiry-based learning, encouraging students to develop strong problem-solving skills that extend beyond the classroom.
Each MYP year is assessed at the end of the academic year, allowing us to track progress and tailor learning pathways. In MYP 5, students are also assessed for DP subject selection, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of the Diploma Programme. Additionally, IGCSE will be compulsory for students in MYP 4 and 5. To meet IGCSE requirements, students must take a minimum of six subjects, including three mandatory ones—English, Mathematics, and a Science—alongside any three others of their choice. This integration further strengthens their academic foundation and supports informed decision-making as they transition into the next phase of their education.
By providing real-life examples, we help students see the relevance of mathematics in their everyday lives and inspire them to apply their knowledge in new and innovative ways. Curiosity, critical thinking, and active exploration are at the core of our approach, allowing students to interact with mathematical concepts in physical, social, and intellectual contexts.
Recognizing the importance of technology in modern education, our Mathematics program seamlessly integrates digital tools to enhance learning, application, and communication. Our goal is to empower students to build a deep understanding of mathematical principles by connecting new concepts to their prior knowledge and experiences, guiding them toward increasingly complex levels of abstraction.

The MYP mathematics framework includes four branches:

Science
At ICS Paris, we provide a highly personalized approach to teaching Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Our students learn in small, focused groups within their grade levels, ensuring that each individual receives the support they need to thrive.
We go beyond rote memorization and scientific terminology—our educators encourage students to think critically and creatively, making meaningful connections between their studies and the world around them. Science at ICS Paris is more than just a subject; it’s a gateway to understanding and shaping the future.
Our dedicated teachers guide students to explore the intersections between science, the environment, ethics, and global and local economies. From Grade 6 to Grade 10, students engage in an integrated science curriculum, building a strong foundation across disciplines. As they progress to Years 10 and 11, they can specialize in Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, preparing for the Diploma Programme (DP). Our approach follows the four key objectives of the MYP: developing knowledge and understanding, inquiry and design skills, analytical thinking, and reflection on science’s societal impact.
For those pursuing the DP, our science program equips students with the skills necessary for a range of future careers—whether in research, laboratory work, education, environmental studies, or science communication. At ICS Paris, we inspire students to see science as a tool for innovation and positive change.
Individuals and Societies
At ICS Paris, we are committed to nurturing students into proactive and empathetic global citizens, a vision that is deeply embedded in our approach to teaching Individuals and Societies. This diverse subject area begins with an Integrated Humanities curriculum for Grades 6–8, before expanding into specialised disciplines such as Business Management, Economics and Global Perspectives (History/ Current Affairs) in Grades 9–10.
Our teaching philosophy emphasises fostering an understanding and appreciation of the world through real-world examples, helping students recognise the interconnections between societies, cultures, and economies.
Through this program, students develop critical skills to analyse the complex factors influencing individuals, societies, and the environment. By exploring human behaviour and societal dynamics, they are encouraged to question information, think independently, and engage with both local and global challenges—preparing them to be the informed decision-makers of the future.
Design
Design plays a crucial role in shaping our world—it influences our choices, the products we use, and even how we perceive ourselves. At ICS Paris, students develop essential design skills by working with a variety of materials, tools, digital platforms, and applications.
From Grade 6 to Grade 8, students explore both Digital and Product Design, learning to tackle real-world challenges using the design cycle—a process that involves research, idea development, creating solutions, and evaluating outcomes. Guided by expert teachers, they engage in hands-on projects that encourage creativity, problem-solving, and technical proficiency.
In Digital Design, students delve into topics such as web and graphic design, video production, data management, robotics, and programming. They gain experience with industry-relevant tools and software, preparing them for the evolving digital landscape.
Product Design begins with foundational skills like measuring, tracing, and cutting, gradually progressing to advanced conceptual modelling using computer-aided design (CAD) tools. Students bring their ideas to life using laser cutters, 3D printers, and other advanced equipment. The curriculum is designed to be both stimulating and enjoyable, ensuring continuous growth in technical and creative skills.
At ICS Paris, students benefit from state-of-the-art technology and resources. Our 1:1 iPad programme from Grade 4 to Grade 8 and our Laptop programme from Grade 9 ensure seamless digital integration into their learning experience. In addition, our well-stocked libraries provide a perfect balance of books, technology, and hands-on learning tools for assignments, projects, and group activities.
Students have access to personal devices, such as iPads or laptops, ensuring seamless digital integration in their learning. They can also explore their creativity in our Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab), which is equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, and other advanced design tools. Additionally, they benefit from our newly designed Innovation Centre, a dedicated space for AI, robotics, design, visualization, coding, and more, fostering hands-on learning and technological exploration.

Art
At ICS Paris, our approach to the Arts fosters confidence, resilience, and adaptability, grounded in key principles such as aesthetics, transformation, communication, and identity.
From Grade 6 to Grade 10, students have the opportunity to explore Visual Arts, Drama, and Music, allowing them to express themselves through sound, movement, and imagery. We encourage students to view creativity as a dynamic means of communication and a tool for shaping the world around them. Our teaching philosophy emphasizes exploration and discovery, helping students make meaningful connections between their artistic experiences and their understanding of the world.
Students at ICS Paris benefit from dedicated spaces for art, music, and drama, where they engage in immersive projects and productions that challenge and inspire them. Through hands-on learning, they develop technical skills within each artistic discipline, gaining the ability to convey their ideas and emotions effectively.
A core aspect of our program is real-world engagement. We maintain strong partnerships with local artists, musicians, and theatre professionals, offering students unique opportunities for collaboration. Additionally, our annual Artist in Residence program enables in-depth interaction with creative professionals, enriching students' artistic experiences.
As an international school with a diverse student body, we emphasize multilingualism within our Arts curriculum. Students take part in global events such as the annual Globeducate Music Festival and the Globeducate Arts Competition, allowing them to showcase their talents on an international stage.
By Grade 11 and 12, students refine their artistic voice through a two-year intensive program that prepares them for the IB Diploma Programme. This phase encourages greater independence in exploring materials, techniques, and artistic intentions.
Our MYP and DP Arts education is further enriched by a range of co-curricular activities, including The ICS Orchestra and the Recycling Club, where students learn to present and develop their artistic and design work in innovative ways.
Physical Education
Students at ICS Paris have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports activities at Aquaboulevard, the largest recreational center near Paris. This state-of-the-art facility, just 15 minutes from the school, provides an excellent environment for physical education. Each month, students engage in a different sport, allowing them to explore and develop diverse athletic skills. Transport is arranged via bus, with teachers and supervisors accompanying the students to ensure a safe and structured experience.
Physical and Health Education (PHE) at ICS Paris plays a crucial role in enhancing students' overall learning journey. Studies consistently highlight the positive impact of well-structured school programs in promoting physical activity, healthy eating habits, and improving academic performance. ICS Paris offers an outstanding setting with top-tier sports facilities, providing students with opportunities to build an active and healthy lifestyle while making the most of the surrounding environment for various activities.
All students in Grade 6 to 10 follow the Physical and Health Education (PHE) Middle Years Programme, which introduces them to a broad spectrum of physical activities. In Years 10 and 11, students can either continue with the PHE Middle Years Programme or opt for the Physical Exercise and Well-Being (PEW) programme. This programme offers exposure to a variety of sports and activities categorized into individual sports, team sports, aesthetic movement activities, alternative sports, and fitness and health exercises.

MYP Core
The core of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) is consistent across all International Baccalaureate schools and plays a vital role in unifying the curriculum. It supports students in building skills that apply across different subjects, encouraging them to make connections between areas of learning. This approach allows your child to apply their knowledge in practical and relevant ways. Every aspect of teaching and learning in the MYP is linked to its core.
Approaches to Learning
One of the key advantages of the MYP for students is its strong focus on Approaches to Learning (ATL), which helps them enhance their ability to locate and assess information effectively while also improving their organizational skills. Throughout their MYP courses, students will develop crucial competencies in technology, teamwork, and communication. Service as Acton
A major strength of the MYP lies in its focus on empowering students to make a meaningful difference in their communities. The program emphasizes experiential learning, moving beyond conventional classroom methods to provide hands-on opportunities. Through involvement in real-world projects, students gain insights into their personal talents and interests. More significantly, they are inspired to use their abilities to contribute to initiatives that drive positive change. While many of these action-based experiences are connected to academic subjects, students are also encouraged to explore personal projects that reflect their own passions, even outside the standard curriculum.
Community Project
MYP projects help students to develop the attributes of the IB learner profile; provide students with an essential opportunity to demonstrate approaches to learning (ATL) skills developed through the MYP; and foster the development of independent, lifelong learners The community project focuses on community and service, encouraging students to explore their rights and responsibilities to implement service as action in the community. The community project gives students an opportunity to develop awareness of needs in various communities and address those needs through service learning. As a consolidation of learning, the community project engages in a sustained, in-depth inquiry leading to service as action in the community. The community project may be completed individually or by groups of a maximum of three students.
MYP Student Services
At ICS Paris, we are committed to cultivating an inclusive and diverse environment, recognizing that every student has individual learning preferences and unique support requirements.
To help all students succeed, we run the ICS Paris Mentor Program, which offers ongoing support and scheduled check-ins throughout the school year. For those learning in more than one language, our BML (Bilingual and Multilingual Learners) department provides personalized language support as needed. Students can also reach out to our Student Wellbeing team and receive individualized assistance through our Learning Support services.

ICS Paris prioritizes student well-being as integral to learning and development. Recognizing that students thrive when they feel safe, supported, and valued, we focus on nurturing the whole child. Through the IB Learner Profile attributes (like being balanced and caring) and Approaches to Learning skills (emphasizing self-management and social skills), we actively foster emotional resilience, positive relationships, and a healthy approach to challenges, creating a supportive community where every student can flourish personally and academically.
English Support
Our students join us worldwide, and their diversity and individuality enrich our teaching and make ICS Paris a very special learning community. We teach the International Baccalaureate curriculum, including the IB Diploma, and our language of instruction at school is English. It is important that all students reach a high level of English literacy in order to be successful. Although the language of instruction is English, there are many languages used by our multilingual students in the classrooms during their learning. Therefore it is important that our multilingual students maintain their home language in order for them to thrive at our school. At ICS Paris, we offer multiple opportunities throughout the day for our students to continue to develop their languages.

Learning Support
Our Learning Support program provides specialized assistance for students with diverse learning needs. We work collaboratively with teachers, families, and students to identify barriers to learning and implement personalized strategies and resources. Our goal is to ensure every student has equitable access to the curriculum and the support needed to thrive academically and reach their full potential within an inclusive environment.
Examination at the end of Grade 10 (MYP5)
Grade 9 (Year 10) students and Grade 10 (Year 11) students have the option to take some official IGCSE examinations, at the end of Grade 9 and Grade 10. Every Year 10-15% of our students take the Cambridge GCSE exam with outstanding results.
