Million Minutes Challenge

Million Minutes Challenge

At ICS Paris, our Primary students have enthusiastically taken on the Million Minutes Challenge, an exciting initiative that encourages daily reading and learning beyond the classroom. So far, students have collectively recorded an impressive 83,000 minutes!

Each day, students track their reading time, helping to build strong learning habits and a sense of responsibility. At the end of each week, the Student Council gathers and documents the results to see which House is in the lead.

This challenge is a great example of learning in action, bringing together real-life mathematical thinking as students calculate their minutes, literacy development through regular reading, and bilingual skills across languages. It also promotes collaboration, confidence, and student agency, empowering learners to take ownership of their progress in a fun and meaningful way.

Learning Beyond the Page: A Transdisciplinary Approach

The challenge served as a masterclass in transdisciplinary learning. We didn't just count pages; we integrated core curriculum skills into the fabric of the competition:

  • Mathematical Thinking: Every week, students weren't just reading; they were analyzing. From creating bar graphs to tracking progress and calculating statistics, students turned their reading data into a practical math exercise.

  • Multilingualism & Inclusion: We were thrilled to welcome parents into our classrooms to read stories in their native languages. This allowed our students to celebrate the diverse linguistic tapestry of our community, making reading a global experience.

  • Student Agency & Leadership: House Captains took the lead, meticulously gathering and documenting the minutes for their respective Houses. This transformed a passive reading activity into a spirited competition that boosted school morale and fostered leadership skills.

"I am incredibly proud of our entire community," noted school leadership. "This initiative didn't just encourage reading; it brought parents, students, and staff together in a way that made learning feel meaningful, competitive, and truly collaborative."

While we celebrate the 83,000 minutes logged before the break, the true victory lies in the habits built during this challenge. The Million Minutes Challenge demonstrated that when we combine literacy with community engagement and practical math skills, learning knows no boundaries.

Thank you to every student, parent, and staff member who helped turn our hallways into a hub of excitement and discovery. We can’t wait to see what heights our next reading challenge will reach!
